The ceremony isn’t until February, but talk about the Academy Awards is already shrouding some films. Just the other day I was in my local bookmakers when I came upon a poster declaring that Argo is 2/1 favorite to win Best Picture. I was astounded that they were offering odds on the Oscars so early, but I was even more confused that Argo is the favorite to win Best Picture. Argo is indeed a good film, but I had thought Spielberg’s Lincoln would take the title of bookies favorite.

I guess I’m not necessarily addicted to nostalgia. I understand that things move forward for a reason, but it’s hard sometimes not to give in a little.
I rarely go more than a few days without missing the horror movie conventions. I’ve been hitting Anime conventions as a staffer for about seven years now. I went to my first one in November 2004, and I added horror movie cons to the dance card in 2006. I had just accepted a staff position with a horror movie website, and they were eager to make a name for themselves by going to one of the big conventions, putting the word out, scoring some interviews, making connections, and just getting the site going in general.
In the space of two days I was accosted by two trailers for two different films based on the life of Alfred Hitchcock. The first was for a HBO TV movie called The Girl, based on the making ofThe Birds. It stars Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren and Toby Jones as the master of suspense. The second trailer was for a Sacha Gervasi film simply titledHitchcock. It focuses on the making of Psycho with Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh and Anthony Hopkins as the legendary director. While the HBO film was shown in October we must wait until February next year to see Hopkins play the plump director. It seems Hitchcock is in vogue at the moment.
People who say that an aspect of our society used to be better in the past are usually wrong. No, people didn’t dress better in the past, kids weren’t nicer in the past, and society certainly wasn’t safer in the past. Very few things were better in the past than in the present, no matter what your grumpy middle aged neighbor wants you to believe. However, there is one area of our culture that has stagnated and perhaps gotten worse: film.

I’m not a huge fan of his work. I can take his shows in small doses (although I think The Cleveland Show is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen on television), and I liked Ted, but I’m still a little baffled by the level of success he’s reached.
For a while there you just couldn’t get away from the hoopla surrounding Kristen Stewart cheating on Robert Pattinson with her forty something director of her film Snow White and the Hunstman, Rupert Sanders. It was breaking news across all media outlets, from tabloids to twitter and everything in between.
